For nearly two decades, Global Press has trained and employed local journalists around the world in essential reporting techniques, leveraging each reporter’s access and existing knowledge to change static and stereotypical narratives often written about their communities.

Global Press is pleased to offer our reporting certificate programs in Peru this year! Global Press Institute programs train reporters to use actionable techniques that elevate their reporting and earn lasting audience trust. The first program, Reporting Shifting Democracies, will be offered to journalists in Peru in the summer of 2025.
What is democratic backsliding?
Democratic backsliding happens when elected leaders use legal tools to weaken democratic systems—eroding checks and balances, silencing dissent and shrinking accountability. It can include undermining courts, attacking the press, manipulating elections or exploiting identity politics, all tactics that may gain support when democracy falls short. Because these actions unfold slowly, they can be hard to detect. Journalists play a key role in recognizing these shifts and covering them with accuracy, neutrality and context to earn public trust in increasingly polarized environments.

How does the training work?
Certificate programs are administered through the Global Press Institute online training platform. Each program iteration will train a maximum of 200 reporters. Most courses can be completed independently, though the program includes at least one live session and numerous opportunities for community collaboration. This certificate program is offered free of charge for selected reporters.
